Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), GOI, Sponsored Post Graduate Course & Scholarship under the Deep Ocean Mission

The Deep Ocean Ocean Mission Programme of MoES launched during September 7, 2021 is an ambitious programme comprising six verticals related to ocean technology. The DOM vertical 6 delas with the establishment of Advanced Marine Station for Ocean Biology (AMSOB), which is being implemented by National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), Chennai. One of the main aims of AMSOB is capacity building by sponsoring various capacity building programmes such as Post Graduate course, Junior Research Fellowship (JRF),/Senior Research Fellowship (SRF), Ph.D., and Post Doctoral Fellowships (PDF), in the areas of Ocean Biology and related engineering. The main aim of this programme is to encourage trained post graduates and skilled professionals with the expertise in ocean biology, related engineering, fisheries and aquaculture research equipping them for both for academia and industry. In this context, under the MoES DOM, the AMSOB NIOT is sponsoring M.Sc. Marine Biology course and related engineering courses at Indian universities in coastal states and union territories (UTs).


  • To enhance the knowledge and skills of students and researchers by offering advanced subject knowledge through practical learning tools. These include relevant skills in their field, such as the use of audio-visual aids, networking opportunities, and AI/ML tools to support learning and expertise development.
  • To strengthen the infrastructure for exposure and hands on experience in basic and advanced instrumentation facilities in the field of Marine /Ocean biology.
  • To impart and develop good communication by improving oral and writing skills, hypothesis creation, testing, problem solving and research mindset.
  • To be competitive with time management skills in achieving the targeted output.
  • To create a collaborative environment that encourages networking and cutting-edge knowledge exchange among peers, industry experts and academics.

  • Fixed monthly fellowships in an academic year to the specific number of selected students having top ranks during the entrance/selection exam conducted by the university. The fellowship covers course fees, examination fees, hostel expenses etc.
  • The Post Graduate scholarship slots shall be allocated as per the University policies/guidelines.
  • To provide fund to support the purchase of course related equipment, software, furniture and computer peripherals for the department within the university offering the course.
  • Support for operational expenditure for consumables, travel, hiring of temporary administrative staff and adhoc faculty/lecturers specialized in the selected subject areas of the department.
  • The course will be advertised as MoES sponsored course in AMSOB Website and University websites.
  • Possibilities of student project work in the institutions operating under the MoES.
  • Also there is a possibility of selected students who will do projects / courses in abroad under the exchange programmes.

    General Guidelines :
    • A recognized Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology / Microbiology / Biochemistry / Zoology / Botany / Fisheries/ Aquaculture /and other courses of Life Science from an Institution which is recognized under Section 2(f) or Section 3 of UGC Act, 1956 or is authorized to award specified degrees as per section 22(1) of the UGC Act.
    Specific Guidelines :
    • The scholarship is available to the students for the first PG Degree programme only. Students, who have already acquired any postgraduate degree, are not eligible for this fellowship.
    • Only students who are below 30 years of age as on the date of admission or as per the university regulation in the first semester/year of a PG programme are eligible to apply under this scheme.
    • The scholarship is available only for students who are admitted to PG degree programme through ‘Regular/Full Time’ mode.
    Types of Institution :

    The scholarships under these schemes shall be available for pursuing PG degree programme in the following types of institutions only:

    • Universities/ Institutions included under Section 2(f) of UGC Act, 1956 and AICTE norms and having valid accreditation from NAAC.
    • Institutions of National Importance.
    • Institutions fully funded by Central or State Governments and empowered to award Degrees.

The first 15 students will receive a full fellowship of ₹10,000 per month for a duration of two years. This fellowship is intended to cover course fees, exam fees, hostel accommodation, boarding, and other living expenses. In addition, 10 more students will be awarded an internship fellowship of ₹5,000 per month during their second-year internship (6-months). All fellowship provisions will follow applicable reservation procedures, and students must maintain a minimum of 75% attendance in each semester throughout the two-year program.

A student is eligible to receive only one scholarship at a time. The student is required to declare that he/she shall not accept/ receive any other monetary benefit/scholarship /fellowship from any other source. In other words, a student who receives scholarship under this scheme, shall not accept any other scholarship or hold any appointment, paid or otherwise, or receive any emoluments, salary, stipend, etc. from any other source during the tenure of the scholarship.

Scholarship granted under the scheme will be kept reviewed by the University authorities during the course, subject to good conduct and maintenance of prescribed attendance. Further the scholarship will only be continued for the second year upon successful completion (or) passing all the subjects of the first year.

Scholarship will be discontinued/terminated if the course or institution is changed.
